Under review: The JATON Operetta AP2140A Stereo Amplifier
140 watts is just enough beyond 100 watts to make you believe you might be
listening to a 200 watt amplifier. That is , it has control at higher levels where
many 100 watts amps begin to lose it.
The Operetta seems to be extended at both ends. There is more bass and at
the same time more energy at the upper levels. If the recording has a drum
somewhere in the mix you will know it, if the recording has old fashioned tape
hiss you’ll hear it.
Separation of instrument is very good with somewhat limited depth and
height. Inner detail is also very good with individual instruments clearly in their
own space. It does not quite have the liquidity, bloom or sweetness of more
expensive solid-state amps, but many amps in the same price range have even
less.
Five or seven channels of the quality as the two channel Operetta AP2140A
would make for a fine surround-sound amplifier. It has punch, clarity and low
noise level which would make vocals and sound effects stand out in a movie
sound-track. A very good thing.
Associated Equipment: Arcam and Meridian electronics and CD player.
Nordorst Interconnects and speaker wire. Dali speakers.
